“Booked, Broke, and Barely Fed”

Posted on 06Aug2025
By Jerome Marcelo

Welcome to a real rhythm-fueled rant from #rmdthoughts—where we keep things real, fun, and just the right amount of savage.

Today, we’re diving into one of the most awkward (and honestly, offensive) phrases in the music world:

“Can your band play for free? It’s great exposure!”

The Gig Ain’t Free

Here’s the tea: playing a gig isn’t just showing up and vibing.

It’s hours of rehearsal.
It’s bringing thousands of dollars in gear.
It’s prepping content, hauling equipment, setting up, sound checking, performing, and tearing down… and maybe pulling a muscle in the process.

You wouldn’t ask a baker for free cake. You wouldn’t tell your photographer friend, “Do my wedding—it’ll look good on your portfolio.”

So why is it okay to ask a band to work for… vibes

The Startup Band Excuse

Sure, we’re a startup band. But that doesn’t mean we’re not professionals.

We invest in instruments, equipment, transportation, rehearsal space, creative direction, branding, and yes, costumes that slay.

We’re not entitled, we’re entrepreneurs—just with loud amps.

Real-Life Lines We’ve Heard (And Rolled Our Eyes At)

“There’s no money, but there will be exposure!” (We checked—exposure doesn’t pay our rent.)

“We’ll feed you!” (We appreciate the pizza. Still gotta pay the bassist.)

Here’s How to Support Start-Up Bands the Right Way:

1. Budget for the Band

If you’re charging admission, selling food, or making money in any form—allocate a portion for live entertainment. Even a modest amount shows respect.

2. Offer Practical Support

Transportation, food, water, and basic hospitality go a long way. Better yet—offer both and a fee.

3. Profit Share if Needed

No cash upfront? Let’s split ticket sales. It motivates both sides and keeps it transparent.

4. Barter Real Value

Do you run a business? Trade your services. Offer high-quality photos, video edits, social media exposure with real reach. Make it worth the trade.

5. Commit to Future Paid Gigs

If we vibe, lock us in for a paid event next time. Loyalty and follow-through mean everything in this game.

Exposure ≠ Compensation

Look, we love music. We love performing. We love YOU. But love doesn’t pay for gas.

It’s 2025. Let’s normalize paying artists fairly—even the up-and-coming ones.

At RMD, we’re more than a party band. We’re a movement of music, joy, and community. When you book us, you’re not just getting a show—you’re investing in culture.

Final Thoughts

So next time someone asks, “Can your band play for free?”—send them this blog.

Then grab your gear, stand tall, and say:

“We don’t play for exposure. We play for value.”
